The Atlas Mountains are a climatic barrier between the Mediterranean basin and the Sahara Desert. It's not known why they are named after Atlas, one of the Titan gods who fought Zeus. His punishment was to hold aloft the heavens from the earth. Maybe it is because it is here where the skies seem to slam into the sand most dramatically.
