The tall Ecuadorian grasses grow everywhere and became an important craft material ages ago. The stalks are gathered then boiled down in large pots. The fibers are then hand separated into varying widths of raw material. The finest hats are made of fibers no more than 1/20" wide. The material is woven into the famous Panama Hats, but also in to furniture and other craft items.
